The office of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the Prime Minister expressed his concern about the planned Israeli attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, during a phone call on Monday with Israeli War Cabinet member Benny Gantz.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to proceed with plans to invade Rafah, located at the southern end of the Gaza Strip, where more than half of the Strip's 2.3 million residents have fled to escape the Israeli attack in the north.
Trudeau's office said in a statement, “The Prime Minister expressed his concern about the planned Israeli attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza and the severe humanitarian implications for all civilians who have taken refuge in the area.”
The statement added that Trudeau “emphasized the importance of renewing efforts toward a two-state solution.”
Canadian lawmakers are voting on Monday on a non-binding proposal supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state, which Israel has denounced as it could deepen divisions within the ruling Liberal Party.
Commenting on the Canadian parliamentary vote, Gantz said in a post on X, “Unilateral recognition (of the Palestinian state), especially after October 7, is counterproductive.”
