Sending mail may become more expensive soon, as Canada Post aims to raise the cost of stamps by seven cents, to 99 cents, for stamps purchased in a booklet, roll, or pane, which it says represent the majority of sales.
The price of individually purchased stamps will also rise to $1.15 from $1.07 for local letters.
Other products, including US and international mail and local registered mail, will also be affected by price changes.
The price increases were announced for public comment on Friday and will take effect on May 6, subject to regulatory approvals.
Canada Post confirmed that local mail prices have risen twice in the past decade: by five cents in 2019 and two cents in 2020. It says the last "significant price change" was made in March 2014.
The agency noted that the proposed price increase comes at a time when it is facing "significant" financial pressures due to inflation and the fact that each year, fewer letters are delivered to more addresses.
It added that the impact of the change is estimated at about 65 cents annually for the average Canadian household, and about $12.07 for the average small Canadian business.
