With Hurricane Beryl heading towards the southeast Caribbean, Global Affairs Canada warns travelers to avoid non-essential travel to Jamaica as well as several countries in the region.

Non-essential travel advisories have been issued for the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Union Island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and to Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada due to Hurricane Beryl.

In the same statement, Canadians were also warned to avoid travel to Haiti due to the hurricane, as well as the threats posed by kidnappings, gang violence, and civil unrest.

How large is the hurricane?

A video from the International Space Station shows how Hurricane Beryl looked on Monday morning as it struck the Caribbean region.

At that time, Hurricane Beryl was a Category 4 storm, with winds reaching speeds of 209 km/h.

American astronaut Matthew Dominic also shared images after flying over the storm, stating that the moment gave him "a strange feeling and a high level of excitement like a student cramming for a weather exam."

Since then, the storm has become deadly. As of Wednesday morning, six people have died as the storm continues its path toward the Gulf of Mexico.

The hurricane is expected to hit Jamaica next.
