Canada is actively working to expand its nuclear infrastructure and increase its uranium production to support clean energy and achieve its carbon emission reduction goals.
Saskatchewan is a center for uranium production, where uranium ore is extracted from some of the largest and highest quality mines in the world, such as the "Cigar Lake" and "McArthur River" mines. Canada expects to increase its production in the coming years to regain its position as the world's largest producer of uranium, which it lost to Kazakhstan since 2009.
As part of its nuclear energy plans, Canada is developing small modular reactor (SMR) technologies, which are considered a potential alternative to traditional fossil fuel technologies. Nuclear energy in Canada also provides about 15% of the electricity, focusing on operating reactors in Ontario and New Brunswick.
This trend reflects a global shift towards adopting nuclear energy as a key solution to achieving clean energy transition goals, amid expectations of increased demand for uranium due to the rising need for safe and clean electrical energy.
