Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly announced new sanctions against Russian agents and organizations on Friday, focusing on those involved in Russian disinformation campaigns.
Joly said in a press statement that Canada is imposing sanctions on 29 agents and 15 entities owned or controlled by the Russian government involved in spreading Russian propaganda related to the war in Ukraine.
Among those sanctioned is Armin Sumbatovich Gasparyan, head of the international department of the Russian-funded RT television channel.
Joly's announcement came while attending the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Bali, Indonesia.
Joly said in the statement, "Canada is committed to fighting misinformation wherever and whenever it is found." Adding: "Today, we make it clear to those promoting deception: they will be held accountable. Canada stands with Ukraine."
Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 1600 Russian agents or entities in response to the Russian war in Ukraine. The sanctions prevent Canadians from dealing with any listed property, providing any goods to them, or offering financial services to them.
The government also announced that the import of certain gold products from Russia is now banned.
In a separate context, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights stressed on Friday the "necessity of achieving justice" for war victims in Ukraine, pointing out that the conflict has "catastrophic effects" on human rights.
Dunja Mijatović said in a memorandum on the consequences of the war that "the Russian Federation's attack has led to serious and widespread violations of human rights and international humanitarian law," with resulting "severe impacts on the exercise of all human rights by the population in Ukraine."
She specifically spoke about cases of "arbitrary executions," "enforced disappearances," "violations of the right to property," "cases of torture and ill-treatment," "sexual violence," as well as cases of arbitrary detention.
Mijatović, who visited Ukraine in May, called for respect for international law related to human rights.
