Montreal police are investigating an incident after a fire broke out at the residence of a former federal minister. The fire may have been caused by anarchists according to police statements.

Police confirmed that a 911 call at 1:30 AM on Wednesday, May 4, reported an explosion on Chester Avenue in the town of Mount Royal suburbs (TMR).
Police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said that two Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles were destroyed in the fire, but no residences were damaged and no injuries occurred.

The police examined surveillance footage and the charred remains of the luxury vehicles are being analyzed.

Brabant said: "At this stage, we are still gathering some information."

An anonymous message sent to the "Montreal Counter-info" website stated that the act was directed at former cabinet minister of the Conservative Party under Stephen Harper, Michael Fortier.

The message said it was done "in the spirit of revenge" in solidarity with the Wet'suwet'en land defenders, and that Fortier currently holds the position of Vice President at RBC Capital Markets and left politics in 2008.

The authors of the anonymous message claim that RBC's involvement in the controversial pipeline in northern British Columbia was the reason for the arson.

The message stated that an incendiary device was placed in the engine of his Jaguar car in front of his house."

Police say, after interviewing the residents of the house where the cars were parked, that there were no threats, no messages sent, and no disputes prior to the fire.

The SPVM takes the anonymous message seriously as Brabant said: "We will look into it, but we are still trying to clarify the reason for the arson."
