People using the VIA Rail train service may face some delays later today due to a potential employee strike.
Some services for July 11 may be affected, as VIA Rail is currently assessing the impact on services and will post information on its website later.
VIA Rail will remain committed to reaching a fair and reasonable agreement and will keep passengers informed of any potential service interruptions.
The union representing more than two thousand workers at VIA Rail initially issued a strike notice for July 11 at 12:01 AM if a new agreement was not reached with the employer.
Late Sunday night, Unifor extended this deadline until 4 PM Monday.
National Treasury Minister Lana Payne said in a statement, "We still hope for the possibility of reaching an agreement.
Our negotiating committees have been steadfast in their desire to achieve a deal that respects and values their work."
Unifor represents nearly 2,400 maintenance workers, on-board service staff, cooks, sales agents, and customer service employees at VIA Rail.
Meanwhile, Via Rail stated that it also wants to avoid the effects of this strike.
The company said, "It is important to note that talks are ongoing with the support of all parties and that Via Rail is working hard to reach an agreement before the deadline."
It is worth mentioning that the main sticking point in the negotiations is job security.
