British Prime Minister Boris Johnson officially announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party today, Thursday, confirming that he will continue to perform his duties as head of government "until a new leader is chosen."
Johnson said in a statement outside his residence "10 Downing Street": "I fought hard in the past few days to continue, because I felt that my job and duty was to continue as Prime Minister," announcing that he appointed a new government "while I continue to undertake the duties of the Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen."
He added: "I am proud of the government's achievements starting from 'Brexit' and establishing relationships on the European continent and the laws that were approved in Parliament, regarding the management of the coronavirus pandemic, vaccines, and exiting the lockdown process, and our actions towards the war in Ukraine, and we will continue to support Ukraine and its fight for freedom," pointing out that "we have pushed a large program for investment and reconstruction, and this was the largest program that could be implemented due to the enthusiasm and activity of the British community, and we must continue this work to advance the implementation of projects."
Johnson pointed out that "it is difficult to change the government at a time when we have achieved successes... It is true that we were delayed in some matters because the economic situation is very difficult locally and internationally, and I regret not being present in the discussions to see the new opinions and projects that will be implemented.
A new leader will come and move the country forward in these difficult and complex circumstances," confirming that "whichever the new prime minister is, I will give him all my support."
He added: "From now until a new leader is appointed, the government will continue its work and I will continue to serve this country."
