The Canadian Ministry of Health has issued a mass recall of hair products due to the discovery of the carcinogenic chemical benzene in them. The National Health Agency had issued a recall on Tuesday for a certain number of shampoo products from the brands Bed Head TIGI, Dove, and Tresemmé that were sold over the past two years in Canada. The Canadian Ministry of Health also warned in the recall notice: "Stop using these products immediately and dispose of them according to the instructions on the package." Additionally, the government stated that 1,574,426 units of hair products were sold in Canada from January 2020 to October 2022. In the same context, dozens of dry shampoo sprays from Pantene and Herbal Essences were recalled due to the presence of the same carcinogenic chemicals, as exposure to benzene can occur through inhalation, orally, and can be absorbed through the skin. High exposure to the chemical can cause several types of cancer, including leukemia and uterine cancer. Furthermore, the Canadian Health Agency said "Daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing is expected to cause long-term harmful health effects." Unilever also stated that it will recall the products out of "precaution." As of October 7, Unilever has not received any reports of injuries in Canada related to the use of its products.
