British Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron affirmed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the need for a two-state solution, after Netanyahu rejected allies' demands to establish a Palestinian state.

Cameron again called, during their meeting at Netanyahu's office in Jerusalem on Wednesday, for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire," according to the British news agency "PA Media".

Cameron urged Israel to open more crossing points to Gaza to allow vital humanitarian aid into the besieged sector.

Cameron also called for the protection of paramedics and hospitals after their destruction in the Gaza war.

Lord Cameron also met, during his diplomatic mission in the Middle East, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah in the West Bank.

Netanyahu continues to oppose the establishment of a Palestinian state, despite calls from the United States to work towards a two-state solution after the war.

Netanyahu said last week that the idea "would put the State of Israel at risk."

Today, Thursday, the British Foreign Office said that Lord Cameron reiterated the United Kingdom's support for Israel's attempts to secure the release of the remaining hostages, believed to be about 130 hostages still held by Hamas.

But Cameron also affirmed to Netanyahu that Britain believes that lasting peace must be based on the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
