British writer Salman Rushdie who was attacked in August in the United States, lost sight in one eye and his hand was paralyzed, and he suffered other injuries, according to his agent in a statement to the Spanish newspaper "El País". Andrew Wylie also stated in an interview with "El País" published at the weekend that Rushdie "lost sight in one eye... and suffered three serious injuries to the neck. He suffers paralysis in one hand because the nerves of his arm were cut. Rushdie also suffered about 15 injuries to the chest and torso." He continued explaining that his injury was "very deep (...) the attack was brutal," but "he will live," revealing for the first time in several weeks details about the writer’s health, without clarifying whether he is still in the hospital. Also, it is noted that on August 12 Rushdie was preparing to participate in a seminar in upstate New York (northeastern United States) when someone stormed the stage and stabbed him several times, particularly in the neck and abdomen. Rushdie was immediately airlifted to the hospital where he was briefly put on a ventilator before his condition improved. Then the main suspect in the attack on the author of the novel "The Satanic Verses" was arrested. The detainee is an American of Lebanese descent named Hadi Matar, 24 years old, who pleaded not guilty in a court in Mayfield, New York, in a trial whose first session was held in mid-August. In the same context, the attack on Rushdie caused shock in the West, while it was praised by extremists in Muslim countries such as Iran and Pakistan. The founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, had issued in 1989 a fatwa calling for the death of the author of the novel.
