Britain sets conditions on arms supplies to Israel

The Israeli newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" said today, Thursday, that Britain has "set conditions" for the continuation of arms supplies to Israel.

The newspaper explained that Britain demanded that Israel allow the Red Cross or diplomats to visit the detainees from the elite force of the Hamas movement, as part of the conditions for the continuation of arms supplies.

"Yedioth Ahronoth" described Britain as "perhaps the second most friendly country to Israel after the United States."

The British request to allow visits to Hamas detainees comes against the backdrop of reports of Israel refusing a previous visit by the Red Cross, under "very strict" prison conditions.

Earlier this March, a team of British lawyers visited Israel for this reason.

Britain says Israel's actions conflict with international law, which requires sharing the list of detainees with the Red Cross or other international organizations, and allowing their visits.

However, Israel rejects such visits, arguing that international law allows it to refuse on the grounds of "security exceptions."

Previously, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron warned Israeli officials that Europe might impose an arms embargo on Israel if the current situation in the Gaza Strip continues, where about 32,000 Palestinians have been martyred since the war began.
