The Foreign Ministers of Britain and Poland on Thursday appealed to the US Congress and the Speaker of the House personally to make a decision that "creates a new era" and approve military and other aid worth $60 billion to Ukraine.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and Polish Prime Minister Radek Sikorski emphasized that approving aid to Ukraine as it fights against Russian aggression is a matter related to the credibility of the United States among its NATO allies and the world. Poland and Britain have been among the strongest supporters of Kyiv throughout the two years of war.

Sikorski said during a press conference after talks with Cameron: "This is our joint appeal to the US House of Representatives and personally to Speaker Mike Johnson to bring the aid package for Ukraine to a vote," confirming that they demand approval of the package.

He described it as a "decision that creates a new era" which would affect the credibility of the United States worldwide.

Cameron said that helping Ukraine is "the challenge of our generation" and that the main question is "do we have the political will to match that," referring to the challenge posed by the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Cameron said, "We must not let (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin think that he can wait for us or delay us, and for this reason this vote in Congress is very important," adding that he makes the appeal as "a person who has a deep and lasting love for the United States – for its democracy and belief in freedom – but (also) as someone who truly believes in the importance of our alliance."

The highly demanded package has been stalled due to infighting in Congress. It was recently approved by the Senate but faces deep uncertainty in the House of Representatives. Hardline Republicans in the House, allied with former President Donald Trump – the frontrunner for the party’s presidential nomination and critic of support for Ukraine – oppose this legislation.

The legislation will allow the purchase of US-made defensive equipment, including ammunition and air defense systems. Approximately $8 billion will be allocated to help the government in Kyiv and other aid.

Johnson cast doubt on the package and clarified that it may take weeks or months before Congress sends the legislation for President Joe Biden’s approval – if it is approved at all.

Cameron stressed that the American decision "is not just a European issue."

Cameron said, "There will be other people watching what the United States does. They will watch in China, they will watch in Iran, and every country around the world will be watching to say: Are we, the Western countries, reliable allies?"

He is scheduled to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda later on Thursday.
