The day after the last televised debate between Lula and Jair Bolsonaro, who exchanged insults before the second round on Sunday, Brazilians thus reach Saturday the end of a heated presidential campaign. During more than two hours, on Friday, on TV Globo, the most watched channel in the country, the two candidates hurled insults and accusations of lying, instead of presenting their concrete projects for the next four years. Also, the far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, 67 years old, said: "Lula, stop lying, go home!". Former leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who celebrated his 77th birthday on Thursday, did not remain silent and replied: "This man is the biggest liar in the history of Brazil." He is "crazy". Then Bolsonaro asked his opponent: "Do you take Viagra?", referring to the controversy over the purchase of 35,000 Viagra pills for the army. Also, Lula attacked his opponent regarding his international policy saying: "Under your government, Brazil has become an outcast. No one wants to welcome you, and no one comes here." Bolsonaro sarcastically replied: "He thinks he is the father of the poor," before calling him a "thief." Lula was imprisoned for 18 months on corruption charges in 2018 and 2019 before the conviction was overturned. Additionally, the Friday debate crowned a dirty campaign that was marked by the spread of a flood of misinformation on social media. In the same context, political writer Otavio Guedes said on GloboNews channel after the debate "It was a debate that did not bring anything that could change the facts." Lula slightly increased (from four to six points) his lead in the latest poll conducted by the Datafolha institute and published on Thursday, gaining 53% of voting intentions, compared to 47% for the far-right president. In the first round, on October 2, Lula obtained 48% of the votes compared to 43% for Jair Bolsonaro. The latter's result was much higher than expected by opinion polls, giving him some momentum during the second campaign.
