A member of the House of Commons in Ottawa from the New Democratic Party (opposition) announced his resignation from his federal parliamentary seat to work with the New Democratic Party government in the province of Manitoba in west-central Canada.
Daniel Blaikie says he will step down as the Member of Parliament for the "Elmwood-Transcona" riding in Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba, at the end of next March, after about a decade of political work at the federal level, to take up a position as senior advisor on intergovernmental affairs to the Premier of Manitoba, Wab Kinew.
Kinew is the leader of the New Democratic Party in Manitoba and became Premier of the province last October after his party won a majority government in a general election.
Blaikie said the new job would allow him to spend more time with his family.
Blaikie was first elected as a member of the House of Commons in the October 2015 general election, reclaiming the "Elmwood-Transcona" seat for the New Democratic Party from the Conservative Party, and retained it in the October 2019 general election and the October 2021 election, the last federal general election.
The "Elmwood-Transcona" riding is considered a stronghold of the New Democratic Party and was previously represented, under the same party's banner, by Bill Blaikie, Daniel's father.
"I have been honored to be part of the federal New Democratic Party caucus, and now I am honored to join Premier Kinew's team in Manitoba," Blaikie said today in a press statement.
"I wish Daniel success as he continues to defend the values and policies of the New Democratic Party, such as justice for workers and real accountability to ensure wealthy companies and CEOs pay what they owe," said Jagmeet Singh, leader of the federal New Democratic Party.
The federal New Democratic Party and the New Democratic parties in Manitoba and other Canadian provinces are independent parties from each other, but they converge around shared principles and policies.
