German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called on the international community to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
During the United Nations General Assembly session in New York, Baerbock said today, Friday: "If we care about a world where every life is equally important, then each of us must resist the Russian war."
In light of the suffering of civilians in the Gaza war and the crisis in Sudan, the Green Party politician emphasized that the victims of these conflicts have not been forgotten: "Every life is equally important. Humanity is indivisible."
On the occasion of the second anniversary of Russia's war on Ukraine tomorrow, Saturday, Baerbock said: "We will stand by Ukraine no matter how long it takes. Because we oppose a world of indifference," pointing out that the United Nations stands for a world where every life is equally important, whether it is Palestinian, Israeli, Sudanese, or Ukrainian life. She saw that the worst thing one can do is "to exploit one person’s pain to diminish another's pain," and warned that this will only serve "those who want to divide us in order to impose their indifferent agenda on the world."
Baerbock said that "Putin has repeatedly proven that human life means nothing to him – whether abroad or at home." She added that the Russian president "does not hesitate even to arrest Russian children because they laid flowers to express their sorrow over the death of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny."
Baerbock called for a humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip given the suffering of the civilian population in the Palestinian territory, aiming to work towards a permanent ceasefire and for a two-state solution in the long term.
Baerbock continued by saying she knows the conflict in Gaza has stirred strong emotions in many countries. "Therefore, it is very important not to succumb to those who want to exploit one person’s pain against another’s." She affirmed that political leadership means facing partisanship "to protect our communities from the poison of dehumanization."
