The Belgian public prosecutor's office announced the arrest of 25 suspects in the country today, Wednesday, during 12 raids as part of investigations into human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
The police searched 56 homes in the capital, Brussels, as well as in Antwerp, Liège, and East Flanders. Under court orders, 30 brothels in the Brussels-North suburbs known for the prevalence of prostitution were closed.
The public prosecutor's office stated in a press release that the raids are part of an investigation into the trafficking of women from Nigeria and Ghana.
The suspects face charges of placing Nigerian women in the windows of brothels and demanding exorbitant fees from them.
The press release indicated that in addition to the arrest of 25 individuals, 23 others were detained following the raids.
A judge will decide whether the suspects will be referred to trial.
