A fire official in South Korea said that the recorded death toll in a stampede incident in the central area of Seoul reached 120. The official added that the number of injured reached 100, some of whom are in serious condition. The incident also occurred around 10:20 PM local time (13:20 GMT), where a large number of people fell in a narrow alley during Halloween celebration activities. Earlier, the official had reported the death of 59 people and injuring of 150 others. Civil defense initially announced that dozens of people suffered cardiac arrest in the Itaewon district in the center of the capital during Halloween celebrations. Also in South Korea, civil defense used the term cardiac arrest because only doctors are officially authorized to declare death, and a spokesperson for the fire department confirmed that 140 ambulances were sent to care for the victims, as they appeared to have been caught in a stampede amid large crowds in the area where many people were participating in Halloween celebrations. In the same context, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called on hospitals to prepare to receive the injured, according to his office. Photos published by Yonhap News Agency showed more than ten people lying in a street with rescue personnel providing first aid to some of them, while the police established a security cordon. According to a video filmed on-site, about 20 people lying covered with sheets and blankets, and other victims were placed on stretchers and carried to ambulances. Furthermore, this year's Halloween celebrations are the first in South Korea since the COVID-19 pandemic, as South Koreans were forced to wear masks during outdoor events.
