The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced the launch of a new automated system aimed at helping Canadians who do not file their tax returns to obtain government benefits and assistance.
The federal budget this week stated that the Canada Revenue Agency will also offer a plan in 2024 to expand the service, after consulting with stakeholders and community organizations.
In fact, this step comes as one of the multiple budget measures aimed at assisting Canadians with living costs, as experts have called for this step, pointing out that many Canadians miss out on benefits they are entitled to.
It is also worth noting that filing tax returns every year is not required unless the person owes money, but the federal government relies on those returns to assess income and provide benefits and assistance to individuals.
This includes the Canada Child Benefit in addition to the recent increase in the Canada Housing Benefit, and the temporary doubling of the Goods and Services Tax credit.
It is also noteworthy that the Canada Revenue Agency will expand access to a service created in 2018, which allows some low or fixed income Canadians to automatically file simple returns by phone.
