The federal government has updated its border rules to allow fully vaccinated travelers entering via the land border a one-time exemption from fines or quarantine requirements if they unintentionally fail to provide the required health documents through the ArriveCAN app.
In an email statement sent to CTVNews.ca on Saturday, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said the one-time exemption will only be granted to fully vaccinated travelers who have no history of non-compliance at the border.
Rebecca Purdy, spokeswoman for the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), said in the email: "As of May 2022, temporary measures have been implemented at the land border for fully vaccinated travelers with the right of entry to provide more flexibility for travelers who have no record of non-compliance and who may have been unaware of the submission requirement."
The eligibility for the one-time exemption includes all vaccinated Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and persons registered under the law. Also, as of July 29, the exemption has been extended to include foreign nationals.
However, travelers who receive the exemption must still provide proof of vaccination upon entry.
After the one-time exemption, Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and persons registered under the law must submit the required documents through the app or face quarantine, testing, or fines of up to $5,000.
