The Alberta Liberal Party announced on Monday that there will be no new leader for the party. This comes after no one nominated themselves to be the party leader.
The press release provided to CTV News confirmed that John Roggeveen will remain the interim leader of the Alberta Liberal Party.
Roggeveen was appointed interim leader of the Alberta Liberals in 2021 to replace former leader David Khan.
Helen McMenamin, chairperson of the Alberta Liberals, said in the statement, "Although there was a final absence of any leadership candidate, there were interested candidates but circumstances prevented them from continuing.
Other young leaders in the party feel they need more time to learn before entering the leadership race."
McMenamin acknowledged that Alberta Liberals have gone through a "tough time" in the party. The Liberals were the official opposition from 1993 to 2012, before losing their official party status in 2015 after David Swann was the only regional Liberal elected to office.
In the 2019 election, they were excluded. However, McMenamin insisted there is hope for the party. “We see signs of a brighter future for the Alberta Liberal Party. We will continue to work for that future and a better tomorrow for the people of Alberta."
The press release did not mention whether Alberta Liberals will try again to name a permanent leader or not.
