Daniel Smith, the mayor of Alberta, announced in a tweet on the social networking site X that parental consent will be required for students who wish to change their names or gender pronouns in schools, for students aged 15 or younger.

Smith pointed out that students aged 17 and above will not need parental consent on this matter, but they will have to be informed.

She also mentioned that this decision was made after discussions with the Conservative Party.
She added in her talk some matters regarding transgender people and the new policies related to transgender youth in terms of restrictions on their treatment and sports practices.

She stated that she wants transgender people to know that they are loved and supported, and in a video of Smith

She pointed out that one of the greatest responsibilities that parents can bear is to encourage the right of our children to develop until they become mature, and be more capable and prepared to make decisions that affect their lives.
She added that sex reassignment surgeries will be banned for those under 17 years old, as well as hormone therapy for adolescents, and parents must inform their children about sexual orientation in schools.
