Canada is among the worst in the world when it comes to protecting whistleblowers, according to a recent report.

The Washington-based Government Accountability Project ranked 61 countries on whistleblower protection laws.

Canada ultimately tied with Lebanon and Norway. The ranking examined 20 factors, including the ability to safely report issues within the company, protecting identities in confidential disclosures, and ensuring things are not worse off than before the alert.

Canada scored only one point out of 20 for having a system in place to review the current law after five years. The five-year review has not occurred for a decade.

Tom Devine, the legal director of the Government Accountability Project, says Canada’s whistleblower law is "weaker than a cardboard shield," adding that the current protection "is very much like a tissue paper shield."

The existing federal law covers only public employees, not ordinary citizens. "Canada is one of the few countries in the world that has a national whistleblower law limited to the public sector."

Trudeau faced questions about political interference in the SNC-Lavalin case and a half-million-dollar deal awarded to the WE Charity group.

Ethics commissioner at the time, Mary Dawson, also found that he violated conflict of interest law by accepting the gift of accommodation and travel on a private plane to the Aga Khan’s private island.
