During a visit to Israel last week, U.S. Central Command leader Michael Kurilla discussed with several senior Israeli officials the impact of the political and social crisis in the country on the Israeli army.
Israeli and American sources told the newspaper "Haaretz" that General Kurilla, who met last Thursday with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Chief of Staff of the Israeli army Herzi Halevi, asked both how the legislation to remove reasons for reasonableness and the surrounding public controversy affects the combat readiness of the Israeli army and the relations between the army and the political level.
A number of soldiers in the Israeli army's reserve units have called for skipping military service in protest against the passing of the reasonableness law to limit judicial powers over the cabinet, and Chief of Staff Halevi confirmed that a lack of response from officers to reserve call-ups harms the army.
In recent days, there has been an increase in the number of active officers in the Israeli Air Force's reserve units who have reported that they will not continue in their positions, and among these officers are individuals holding important positions in the Air Force.
The army fears that the wave of withdrawal from the reserve forces will spread to other branches of the army such as the General Command, and elements in the reserve units of the intelligence and cybersecurity have also begun reporting that they will not continue their service due to the judicial amendments.
