A coalition of news publishers in Canada has announced a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of using their news content without permission to train its generative artificial intelligence system, ChatGPT.
The coalition includes a number of prominent media organizations, including The Canadian Press, Torstar, Globe and Mail, Postmedia, and CBC/Radio-Canada.
The plaintiffs clarified that OpenAI collected its news materials and used them to train the AI model without obtaining the necessary licenses or consent, which constitutes a violation of copyright laws.
The coalition affirmed that these practices threaten the media industry by exploiting content produced at great cost and professional journalistic efforts, while OpenAI benefits from it without compensation.
This case comes amid escalating global disputes between artificial intelligence companies and content producers over how copyright-protected data is used to train intelligent systems. Publishers are demanding fair compensation and guarantees to protect their rights in the future.
