The York Regional Police say a suspect has been charged in connection with the violent sexual assault of an elderly woman in her home in Newmarket.
The police said the incident occurred before 4:30 pm on May 25.
A 74-year-old woman was at her home when a young man suddenly entered with his face uncovered. The police said the suspect violently attacked the woman and sexually assaulted her causing psychological and physical harm.
She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. In a press release on Thursday, the police said they were able to quickly identify and arrest the suspect.
The police added that Yorkaf Rodriguez Martinez, 23, of Newmarket has been charged with sexual assault causing bodily and psychological harm, illegal presence in a home, and two counts of failing to comply with a police order.
Investigators urge anyone with information or any other potential victims to come forward to the police station and provide similar information.
