Texas State - Greg Abbott says 15 people were killed in a shooting on Tuesday at an elementary school.
Abbott says the suspected shooter, an 18-year-old young man, also died and is believed to have been killed by officers who responded to the incident.
He says 14 children and one teacher were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, about 85 miles (136 kilometers) west of San Antonio. Abbott says the shooter was carrying a handgun and possibly a rifle.
Officials at a hospital said two people were killed after a shooting at an elementary school in Texas on Tuesday, and more than twenty children were injured.
Police said the suspected shooter is in custody and ambulances transported 13 children to Uvalde Memorial Hospital after reports of a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, about 85 miles (135 kilometers) west of San Antonio, according to hospital officials.
The nature and severity of the injuries were not immediately known, nor whether the dead were included in this number. Another hospital, the University Hospital in San Antonio, said a 66-year-old woman is in critical condition.
Authorities did not immediately provide any details about the shooting, although the Uvalde Police Department said the shooter was in custody shortly after 1 p.m.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District said an active shooter was reported at the school, which has fewer than 600 students enrolled.
Earlier, officials said all schools in the area were closed due to intense gunfire.
A large police presence surrounded the school Tuesday afternoon, with officers wearing protective vests and heavily armed. School and city officials did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
The shooting in Texas came less than two weeks after a gunman opened fire on a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 Black shoppers and workers in what officials described as a hate crime.
Uvalde is home to about 16,000 people and is the county seat of Uvalde County. The city is about 75 miles from the Mexican border.
