The Iranian team achieved a last-minute victory over its Welsh counterpart, two goals to zero, today Friday, as part of the second round of the group stage of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, in the first edition of the World Cup on Arab soil, in a match held at the "Ahmad bin Ali (Al Rayyan)" Stadium in the Umm Al Afaei area, west of Doha.

With the valuable win, the Iranian team kept its hopes alive to reach the round of 16 of the World Cup for the first time in its sixth participation, after snatching the three points with two goals in added time by Rouzbeh Jashmi (90+8) and Ramin Rezaeian (90+11).

Group B includes, along with Wales and Iran, both England and the United States.

Today's match comes after Iran met, last Monday, at the Khalifa International Stadium, the England team, in the group’s first match, which ended with a 6-2 win for England against Iran.

The Iranian players performed the national anthem before the start of the match, after they refrained from doing so in the first match against England, in solidarity with the protests their country has witnessed for nearly two months, following the death of young Mahsa Amini (22 years old) three days after her detention by the "Morality Police" for not adhering to the strict dress code.

Before the first match, which the Iranian team lost to England, the captain of the team Ali Reza Jahanbakhsh revealed that the matter of performing the national anthem was being discussed and that the decision would be made collectively. It seems that the decision was made collectively this time to perform the national anthem before the crucial match against Wales, after the Portuguese coach of the Iranian team, Carlos Queiroz, acknowledged that the main reason for the defeat against England was the pressure of the "circumstances surrounding the players".

Meanwhile, the Welsh team had a positive draw in its first match with the United States team, as both teams earned a point after each scored a goal at "Ahmad bin Ali" Stadium.
