New opinion polls indicated that Canadians are largely indifferent to King Charles III, with more than half believing that his coronation on May 6 is the right time for the country to reconsider its relationship with the monarchy.

The survey conducted by market research company Leger on Tuesday on 1544 adults indicated that many Canadians greeted Charles's ascension to the throne with disdain, as only 12 percent of respondents said it was good news that Charles is now king, compared to 14 percent who said it was bad news and 67 percent who said they were indifferent.

Only 13 percent of those surveyed said they felt a personal connection to the monarchy, compared to 81 percent who did not.

The survey found that the level of attachment to the monarchy has decreased since the days following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September, when 19 percent said they felt attached and 77 percent did not. Indifference towards Charles also increased during the same period.

The majority of respondents said this is the right time for Canada to reconsider its relationship with the monarchy, with 56 percent in favor and 44 percent against.

Anti-monarchy sentiments were strongest in Quebec, where 71 percent said it was time to reconsider relations.

Indifference towards Charles's ascent to the throne extended to all age groups and regions in the country, although the new king was viewed more favorably in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and among Canadians aged 55 and over. Again, the lowest level of positive reviews was in Quebec, where only 7 percent agreed that it was good for Charles to be king.

King Charles will also be crowned on May 6 at Westminster Abbey and will witness a procession and concert at Windsor Castle and other events.

While 44 percent of participants said they were aware of the event, 73 percent said they were not interested. Twenty-seven percent of respondents expressed interest, but only six percent said they were very interested.

Additionally, sixty percent of respondents said they would not watch television or video coverage, compared to 17 percent who said they would and 23 percent who were unsure.
