The Winnipeg Police Service says human remains were discovered at the Brady landfill, where they were searching in relation to the killing of Rebecca Contois.
The police confirmed the discovery of the remains on Tuesday in a section of the landfill that was closed off during the search for the 24-year-old girl's remains.
The police said in a press statement: "Within a short timeframe, investigators learned that Rebecca Contois' remains were transported to the Brady facility." The police contacted Brady and stopped further dumping of materials. A large area of the landfill was sectioned off to organize the search operation.
Partial remains of Contois were discovered outside a residential building in the 200 block of Edison Street on May 16. Two days later, police confirmed that Contois was the victim of a horrific murder.
The police said they are awaiting autopsy results to confirm the identity of the remains found at the Brady landfill, and the crime scene remains closed.
Constable said, "It is currently on hold, awaiting autopsy results, and to see if the work can be completed, or if there is more work to be done."
The police said they were searching an area the size of "four to six football fields." Police stated that Jeremy Anthony Michael Skibicki, 35, is charged with first-degree murder in relation to Contois.
When Contois' death was announced, police said there was a possibility of other victims. McKinnon said the police service "currently has no additional information." She said, "Of course, this investigation is still largely ongoing, and updates will be provided in due course."
