Some Canadians vacationing in Hawaii witnessed the cancellation of their flight home with Air Canada, as parts of Maui Island were ablaze due to devastating wildfires.
An announcement from the airline indicated that the latest scheduled flight from Maui to Vancouver was canceled due to the airport access closure. It also stated that a larger, empty plane took off from Vancouver on Wednesday evening headed to the island to ferry stranded passengers and those booked on the next regularly scheduled flight.
The company added that it continues to monitor the situation, as regular daily flights between Vancouver and Maui are still scheduled. It is also implementing a flexible rebooking policy for travelers to and from Maui.
The wildfires continued to rage into the night for Hawaii residents, fueled by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, which is located offshore south of the island chain.
Maui County officials say at least 36 people have died, dozens have been injured, and more than 270 buildings have been damaged or destroyed. More fatalities are feared to be confirmed when the fires are extinguished.
