The British newspaper "Financial Times" reported, citing informed sources, that India has asked Canada to withdraw about 40 Canadian diplomats from New Delhi by October 10.
The newspaper explained, "New Delhi has informed Ottawa that it must withdraw about 40 diplomats by October 10."
The newspaper also highlighted, according to informed sources, that India has threatened to revoke the diplomatic immunity of diplomats who remain in the country after the deadline.
One source clarified that there are 62 Canadian diplomats working in India, and New Delhi is seeking to expel 41 of them.
This comes as Indian-Canadian relations have been notably strained following Canada's surprising announcement, which hinted at India's involvement in the killing of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Additionally, the Canadian government announced earlier that it expelled an Indian diplomat over suspicions related to the assassination of the Sikh leader, prompting New Delhi to respond by expelling a Canadian diplomat.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed concern for the safety of its citizens in Canada due to "politically overlooked hate crimes and criminal violence." It warned its citizens against visiting certain areas in Canada.
