There are expectations of severe winter weather on Prince Edward Island this weekend, with snow  and  freezing rain expected to start on Friday morning.

On Thursday morning, the Canadian Ministry of Environment raised its weather statement for the island to a freezing rain warning.

Tina Simpkin, a meteorologist at CBC, said she expects temperatures to start dropping later Thursday, with snow beginning in the afternoon as the storm continues moving toward the Maritimes from the southwest.

Simpkin expects up to seven centimeters of snow before the precipitation changes to freezing rain on Friday.

Simpkin said, "Snow and ice will turn into freezing rain tomorrow morning. This can continue until early afternoon before changing to rain by noon tomorrow."

"About five to ten millimeters of rain is expected before temperatures start dropping again tomorrow night until Saturday morning, when freezing rain returns."

The Canadian Ministry of Environment warns that freezing rain may cause difficult road conditions, as well as power outages.
