A court in Istanbul ruled that British-Turkish novelist Elif Shafak must pay compensation in a plagiarism case, according to the Turkish news agency Anadolu.
Shafak said in a statement published by "Doğan Kitap" publishing house, which she works with, today Thursday, that she rejected these accusations and described them as "slander" and that she will appeal the ruling.
The court decision came yesterday Wednesday in favor of the Turkish writer Mina Gökçcha Kirikanat, who filed the lawsuit.
Kirikanat said that Shafak's novel "The Bastard of Istanbul," first published in [year missing], and the court fined Shafak more than 5000 euros (5417 dollars).
Shafak has received many awards, has 19 books, and is famous for her two bestselling books "The Forty Rules of Love" and "The Bastard of Istanbul."
