Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday that "not every conversation is easy," in the context of his comments on the confrontation with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Indonesia on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by Trudeau and received by the media later.
The Canadian Prime Minister's statement said: "First, not every conversation will be easy, but it is very important that we continue to stand for the things that matter to Canadians, this is something we always do and will continue to do," he said.
Canadian channel cameras captured Xi Jinping during the summit on Wednesday, reproaching Trudeau because their conversations were leaked to the media.
The Prime Minister of Canada responded when asked whether the Chinese president was really angry or if he was displaying his power: "We know that China is an important player on the international economic stage and has a significant influence on events around the world. Canada needs to engage constructively and directly on issues that we can work on together while remaining there to discuss human rights issues."
Trudeau was also asked whether he ignored Xi's concerns in the video clip of the incident, to which the Canadian Prime Minister did not respond directly. Instead, he emphasized that Canada must strike the right balance between its disagreements with other countries and working constructively with those countries, which he said is a balance Canada will always seek to achieve.
