Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that "the state of emergency is not over," after a tense weekend during which the police regained control of downtown Ottawa from protesters, according to "Agence France-Presse".
Trudeau said during a press conference: "Even if the blockades have been removed across the country and the borders are currently open, and even if the situation appears to be returning to normal in Ottawa, this state of emergency is not over. The activation of the Emergencies Act was necessary," expressing "real concerns for the coming days."
He confirmed that he "is convinced that the majority of parliamentarians will stand in support of our values, our democracy, and their Canadian citizens." He expressed confidence that "the decision to activate the law will be approved," calling on all MPs to "take measures against illegal road blockades and to defend public safety for the freedom of Canadians."
