In a statement issued today by the Office of the Canadian Prime Minister regarding the call with the President of Moldova, it was stated that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke today with President of Moldova Maia Sandu.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President Sandu discussed recent events that raise concerns about peace and security in Moldova and the devastating effects of Russia's illegal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, especially for refugees fleeing their homes seeking safety in Moldova.
Prime Minister Trudeau also expressed his gratitude and admiration for President Sandu's strong personal leadership and for the resilience and support of the Moldovan people during this ongoing crisis in welcoming many Ukrainians in need of safety, shelter, and humanitarian assistance.
President Sandu affirmed that Moldova will continue to do everything possible to assist all Ukrainians, especially during these difficult times.
For his part, Prime Minister Trudeau reiterated that the security of Ukraine and Moldova is European security, and the security of all democratic countries that seek to uphold the fundamental principles of international law and state sovereignty.
The two leaders also agreed to stay in close contact and assess the best ways Canada can support Moldova, including through initiatives such as the Moldova Support Conference attended by Canada in Berlin, Germany, on April 5, which helped raise more than 135 million euros to support humanitarian efforts in the country.
