The news agency "Reuters" reported today, Wednesday, that the presidential guard is holding Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum inside the presidential palace.
Security sources revealed that access to the president's headquarters and the offices of the presidential complex in the capital "Niamey" has been prohibited, with the decision coming from the presidential guard, which did not clarify the real reason behind this action.
The sources continued that the presidential guard soldiers have surrounded the presidential palace in the capital "Niamey," indicating that they are closing the president's office and a residential area.
In the same context, a relative of the president told the French newspaper "Le Monde" that President Bazoum and his wife are fine and in good health and are present at the presidential headquarters, confirming that what is happening is not a coup, but tension due to a problem with the presidential guard without further details.
The presidency in Niger announced that the action of the presidential guard and the detention of President Bazoum do not have the support of the army forces, adding in a press statement that the armed forces in Niger are ready to act against the presidential guard unless it retreats.
Sources in the Niger presidency confirmed that the situation remains calm in the area of the presidential palace, and gunfire has not been heard.
