Federal Housing Minister Sean Fraser stated, "The federal government should have never exited the housing business even when high-earning professionals struggle to find affordable housing."
He added, "For most of the last half-century, federal governments from various parties, whether Liberals or Conservatives, have moved away from providing affordable housing in this country, which should have never happened, but it did."
Fraser continued that most of the country is now dealing with a housing crisis that has no easy solutions.
He told media in Vancouver that previous federal governments were primarily busy providing subsidized housing for low-income individuals, but there has been a fundamental shift as working professionals struggle to buy a home, which is an absolutely incredible part of Canada, but it is dealing with an unusual problem.
Fraser pointed to an announcement in a newspaper about the cost of a one-bedroom apartment in Vancouver now being $3,000 per month, and wondered how an elderly person on a fixed income or a student repaying loans can manage these prices.
He said, "I can't set a reasonable price for a one-bedroom unit because people come from different circumstances, but he said that people should not have to pay more than 30 percent of their income to buy a home; if you are working in Canada, you should be able to afford a place to live as a home."
He added, "Building transit and housing near it will give people the opportunity to live and work in their communities."
Furthermore, Fraser said it's important that housing is built for people from various income brackets, and that his government is looking into ways to accelerate housing construction through grants and other incentives.
Fraser stated, "He believes bringing more rentals to the market will lead to lower prices, but he acknowledges that Canadian home prices are subject to many market forces that make them difficult to predict."
He added, "Right now, we want to lower the cost of living. This includes reducing rental costs for people by building more rental buildings designated for this purpose across the country; if you are someone willing to work in this country, it is unacceptable that you cannot afford a place to live in the community you call home."
