Report: Canada and Other Fuel Producers Intend to Increase Production...

Canada is one of the leading fossil fuel producing countries that is expected to withdraw larger amounts of oil and gas in line with agreed international goals to limit global warming, according to a new analysis.

The report, issued by the United Nations today Wednesday in collaboration with a team of international scientists, found that these countries still plan to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels by 2030 than what is required to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

These findings contradict what the government promised under the 2015 Paris Agreement, as well as the International Energy Agency's forecast that demand for coal, oil, and gas will peak this decade.

The report’s authors also said more funds need to be allocated for the transition to clean energy, and that major producers need to cooperate with each other to reduce production.

Blair Ashakolisot, the lead author of the report and a scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute, said in a statement: "We found that many governments promote fossil gas as a key transitional fuel, but have no plans to eventually phase it out".

Canadian production is expected to rise...

The report, citing figures from the Canadian Energy Regulator, showed that Canada – the world’s fourth largest oil producer – is expected to increase its production until 2030 if no action is taken to reduce emissions, by 25 percent which will be higher than 2022 levels by 2030. 2035.

(Under the net zero scenario, where countries meet their climate targets, Canada’s oil production is expected to peak in 2026 and fall to 73 percent below 2022 levels by 2050.)

The report confirms that the federal government and provincial governments have recently approved new oil and gas development projects.

This comes after another assessment of Canada’s climate policy, an audit conducted by Federal Commissioner for the Environment and Sustainable Development Jerry DeMarco.

In the report released on Tuesday, DeMarco found that under the current plan, the country will miss the next greenhouse gas reduction target in 2030 by several million tonnes.

He said, "Canada is the only G7 country that has not achieved any emission reductions since 1990." "But it also shows that it is feasible. Some of these other places have different ways to reduce emissions."
