After moving for more than a week over the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Lee has approached the New England region and Atlantic Canada today "Saturday," and it is expected to make landfall as a tropical storm accompanied by heavy rains, strong winds, and a dangerous level of elevated waves.
The Canadian Hurricane Center anticipates that Lee will make landfall in Nova Scotia sometime after 1800 GMT in New Brunswick as the wind strength decreases from hurricane levels.
The possible path may include the storm heading directly toward the Bay of Fundy, which separates the two provinces and has some of the highest tide levels in the world, with a tide difference reaching up to 12 meters or 16 meters at the head of the bay.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning that covers hundreds of miles of coastline from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia, affecting about nine million people.
Wave heights are expected to rise between 30 to 90 centimeters across much of New England, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Additionally, between five and 12.5 centimeters of rain is expected, and strong tropical winds are forecasted for coastal areas.
As a precaution, the administration of President Joe Biden has issued a disaster declaration for the state of Maine, providing federal assistance to the state ahead of the storm.
Lee has remained a major hurricane over the Atlantic Ocean for more than a week, briefly threatening Bermuda but causing no harm to anyone on land.
