The Canadian Foreign Minister confirmed the passage of the first group of Canadians from the West Bank to Jordan today, Monday.
Melanie Joly said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, "that the group has arrived safely," while Joly's office later confirmed to CTV News that 21 Canadians had crossed.
Joly said she is "delighted" with the arrival of a group of Canadians after "around-the-clock" work by teams in Israel, Jordan, and Canada.
Canadian local affairs held a press conference on Sunday to update Canadians on the latest developments regarding the crisis and the government's plans to assist Canadians in the region.
Joly Sunday, Assistant Deputy Minister for Consular Security and Emergency Management, outlined some of the government's evacuation plans, which included ground transportation starting on Monday.
She said that Canadians will take one bus from Ramallah and cross the West Bank via the Allenby crossing. From there, they will switch buses before entering Jordan, adding that more details will be provided "in the coming days."
Tensions have continued to escalate between Israel and Hamas, which the Canadian government has designated as a terrorist group, since the surprise attack on Israel on October 7.
So far, the deaths of five Canadians have been confirmed amid the war, as Canada continues to plan routes for citizens, permanent residents, and their families out of the war zone.
On Monday, Israeli forces were preparing for a ground attack on Gaza and were asking civilians to find a way out of the area. About 450 Canadians are registered in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with over 6,800 Canadians registered in Israel.
A previous exit route from Gaza through Egypt fell through over the weekend.
As of Sunday evening, approximately 1,000 Canadians were flown from Israel to Athens via a Canadian Armed Forces operation. Since the beginning of the crisis, Global Affairs Canada has received around 4,200 inquiries.
