The new federal Democrats want to impose a cap on the prices of basic goods in grocery stores if the liberal government cannot persuade grocery stores to lower prices themselves.
In Europe, some countries have implemented similar measures, and although Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said he considered this matter, he does not believe it is a good idea.
He said on Tuesday, "You have goods that are traded globally. So think of sugar, think of wheat, how can you have a price in a specific area?"
But I think the better way to do this is to continue to pressure grocery stores and major manufacturers around the world and bring in more competition.
For several months, liberals have tried to persuade the major grocery stores in Canada to sign a code of conduct that they say will lower food prices for everyone.
Champagne said he is trying to entice a foreign grocer to enter the competition, saying, "I think that will help bring about change in the market and improve prices."
Some food costs have recently declined due to a slight decrease in inflation, but the new Democrats say that prices have not fallen as much as they rose in the last three years.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said he is tired of Canadians being ripped off by companies that he claims continue to manipulate prices.
Last month, some shoppers boycotted Loblaw after a month-long campaign by frustrated consumers who feel distressed and blame the grocery giant.
