The U.S. Senate adopted an urgent measure allowing for the temporary continuation of funding for the federal government for 45 days.

Just hours before the government "shutdown," the House of Representatives approved a text in a last-ditch effort to avoid paralysis, before it was approved by 88 Senate members against 9 who opposed it.

In a statement, U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed this decision, pledging to maintain U.S. support for military operations in Ukraine.

Biden said, "I fully expect that the Speaker of the House (Kevin McCarthy) will uphold his commitment to the people of Ukraine and ensure the passage of the necessary support to help Ukraine in this critical moment."

Lawmakers must now consider a separate bill concerning $24 billion in military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine, which Biden wanted to include in the budget.

A vote may be held early next week, according to U.S. media.

Biden regarded the agreement to avoid a government shutdown as "good news for the American people," stating nonetheless that "we should not have found ourselves in this position."
