The pro-Russian hacking group "NoName057" said on Thursday (September 14) that it had attacked government sites in several Canadian provinces and territories. The group had claimed responsibility for the disruption of several official sites in Quebec the day before.

Some government sites in Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, and Nunavut faced error pages or slow speeds when users attempted to access them on Thursday night. The governments of Yukon and Prince Edward Island confirmed that they were affected by distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, but no data was stolen.

Several government websites in Quebec were also hit by DDoS attacks on Wednesday, using this type of attack to leverage infected computers to issue massive connection requests that occupy the network system, making it impossible for real users to access and log in.

NoName057 began its activities shortly after Russia launched a wide-ranging aggressive war against Ukraine. Cybersecurity expert Steve Waterhouse noted that this hacking group targets countries that support Ukraine, having attacked networks in the United States, Germany, and other nations in the past, and in April of this year, it claimed to have attacked Hydro-Quebec's network.

Now, most of the websites that the group claimed to have attacked have returned to normal.
