Poll: Increase in the percentage of Canadians who support sending more military aid to Ukraine

More Canadians want the federal government to send more ammunition and other military supplies to Ukraine to help in its war against the Russian invasion compared to last fall, according to new poll results conducted by Léger on Thursday.

The besieged country is celebrating two years since Russia launched a wide-scale invasion that plunged the country into a brutal war.

The Canadian government has pledged to stand with Ukraine as long as necessary to end the war, but the conflict has increasingly become a subject of domestic politics.

A quarter of the people surveyed by Léger last weekend said Canada should increase the support it sends to Ukraine in the form of military supplies, compared to 20 percent in October 2023.

However, opinions seem divided on the amount Canada should send.

While 25% of participants believe Canada should send more, 23% think Canada should send fewer ammunition to Ukraine, and 34% said Canada should continue its current efforts.

Regarding the amount of money Canada spends supporting the war effort, 38 percent said Canada should maintain the same level of spending, while 31 percent said the government should spend less. Only 16 percent said Canada should spend more money to help Ukraine.

The majority of those surveyed, 60 percent, believe there is no peace in sight and that the war may continue for several more years. Thirty-three percent expect the war to last another two years.

The Léger poll included a sample of 1,529 Canadian adults. A margin of error cannot be assigned to the poll.

Earlier this week, Defense Minister Bill Blair announced that Canada will send more than 800 drones to Ukraine starting this spring. The $95 million donation is part of a previously announced $500 million military aid package for Ukraine.

Conservatives accused the Liberals of failing in Ukraine on Wednesday and called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to deliver more lethal supplies to the country. Although Canada pledged billions in military support, none of that has actually materialized.

Meanwhile, Liberals criticized the Conservatives for “abandoning” Ukraine after the opposition party voted against the modern free trade agreement between Canada and Ukraine due to the mention of the carbon price in the deal.

The poll indicated that humanitarian support for Ukraine seems less divisive, with 41 percent of participants saying Canada should maintain current aid levels and 28 percent suggesting an increase.

Only 15 percent said Canada should send less humanitarian aid.

Since the invasion in 2022, Léger polls indicate fewer Canadians feel the conflict has the potential to escalate into a world war, although 58 percent of respondents still fear this possibility.

A previous poll conducted by Léger showed that three-quarters of participants believed a global conflict might be imminent in March 2022.

As for which country will win the war, 47% of respondents in the latest poll said they do not know. The rest were divided, with 28 percent expecting Ukraine to defeat the invading force, while 25 percent expected Russia.
