Medical sources reported that the number of victims of the powerful storm hitting cities in eastern Libya since yesterday, Sunday, has risen to 25 dead.

Government sources and witnesses said today, Monday, that the storm Daniel, coming from the Mediterranean Sea, has swept through eastern Libya, causing damage to several homes and roads and claiming the lives of 25 people.

Footage circulating on social media showed people standing on the roofs of their cars as they sought assistance after being stranded due to the floods.

The authorities declared a state of maximum emergency, closed schools and shops, and imposed a curfew as the hurricane made landfall yesterday, Sunday, and today, Monday.

Two engineers working in the oil sector told Reuters that four major oil ports in Libya, namely Ras Lanuf, Zueitina, Brega, and Sidra, were closed starting Saturday evening for three days.

The Prime Minister of the National Unity Government in Tripoli, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, said yesterday, Sunday, that he directed all state agencies to "immediately deal" with the damages and floods in the eastern cities.

The United Nations mission in Libya stated that it is closely monitoring the developments of the storm and will provide "emergency relief assistance to support response efforts at both the local and national levels."
