The Canadian Statistics Agency said that the fertility rate in the country reached an all-time low of 1.33 children per woman in 2022.
The federal agency continued that this is part of a downward trend that began in 2009, and it seems that the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily disrupted this trend when the fertility rate rose in 2020 and 2021.
According to the report, other countries went through a similar experience during those years, and the decline in the fertility rate between 2021 and 2022 is the largest observed since the baby bust in the early seventies.
StatCan said it places Canada in the middle of the group of ten high-income countries, which includes the G7 countries.
