Work is finally underway in English Bay in Vancouver to remove a massive barge that has been washed ashore for eight months.
A company has begun drilling pilings into the coastline to secure the barge while it is cut and removed.
The City of Vancouver said installing the pilings is the first step in the removal process, which is expected to take three to four months to complete.
The barge broke free from its moorings during a severe storm and a high tide in November last year.
The waters washed it high onto the sand and rocks near Sunset Beach, overcoming all efforts to tow it earlier this year.
Vancouver officials say the removal plan will ensure the protection of sensitive marine habitats and has been developed in consultation with industry experts, partners, and First Nation groups.
