Power was cut off to nearly 24,000 families in Toronto amid the strong winds that accompanied the arrival of a cold front to the city.
Toronto recorded a new temperature record earlier on Wednesday when the temperature reached 16.5 degrees Celsius at Pearson International Airport,
according to Environment Canada.
But since then, temperatures have dropped with winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour, and the current temperature is -1 degree Celsius, representing a swing of 17 degrees within a few hours.
David McNeil, spokesperson for CP24 Toronto Hydro, said, "We are closely monitoring this storm, and we have prepared additional crews who continue restoration efforts and are ready to respond if necessary."
McNeil added that safety is their top priority, saying that Toronto Hydro advises customers to contact them in case of power line failure.
The power outage began earlier in the afternoon, after 1 PM, with a significant drop in temperatures.
According to meteorologist Jeff Coulson from Environment Canada, the cold front and strong winds are expected to continue until early evening before subsiding tonight.
Environment Canada said in its special weather warning that the sudden drop in temperature may lead to icy surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing during the day.
Toronto will see a return to seasonal temperatures later this week, with temperatures expected to rise to 5 degrees Celsius on Friday and 8 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Temperatures are expected to reach their highest levels during the day in Toronto on Sunday and Monday, where temperatures will rise to 11 degrees Celsius and 12 degrees Celsius respectively on each day.
